Theseus and the Minotaur Cabinet
by Barry Sims

The exploration of Jungian and mythological themes forms a large part of the inspiration for my furniture. This piece is made from recycled steel, copper and aluminium; ash, bronze and Formica on a tensioned birch carcass.

Size: H 58" x W 48" x D 15"

Price: £10,000

I see Theseus and the Minotaur as one and the same being, aspects of the same person. The maze is the dark recess of the unconscious mind and the bull-headed Minotaur the devouring animal in us all which must be overcome to gain wisdom. The cabinet is black because of the darkness of the labyrinth and the colour of the bull. The overall shape is inspired by the form and presence of the bull. I wanted the door to look like an actual door to a labyrinth, ancient and decayed, yet mysterious and powerful. The mask is Theseus and the Minotaur merged after the battle, it is also my boat-race with some horns stuck on!
